Indoor
Dramatic Play – this will allow for pretend play, including role-playing which can help a child solidify an understanding of themselves as well as the roles of other people in their community.
Science Lab – this area will promote investigation and experimentation with various natural and man-made materials. The provocations can help illuminate particular properties of objects (such as texture), basic physics (such as magnetism and light), environmental science (such as care and understanding of plant growth), or a particular process (such as freezing).
Construction Area – this area will contain a variety of ever-changing materials such as blocks, crates, ramps, and train tracks that can be used to construct or create anything. This type of construction is another language that children can use for expressing their interests and thoughts, and can allow exploration of patterns, geometry, gravity, basic mathematics, and even pretend play.
Meeting Areas – we use various meeting areas around the school to gather in groups for planning, for reading, for singing and dancing, or for just greeting one’s friends in the morning.
Library – this is where the children will always be able to find a rotating selection of excellent children’s literature of varying levels as well as a large selection of non-fiction books. In addition, the library includes a listening station and many cozy places to curl up with a good book.
Cubby Room – besides housing the children's cubbies, coats, and shoes, this is also a great space to sit and read a book. Being able to recognize for oneself when they need space is a wonderful coping mechanism and acknowledges a child’s right to choose to be alone.
Studio – this space will offer the children a place to write, paint, draw, sculpt or otherwise express their ideas and thoughts in a more permanent manner.
Common Room - this space is used as our community eating area for snacks and lunch time, but also for small group work or independent journaling or reading.
